App review-Discord

For this review, I’ve chosen to dive into one of the most popular communication apps today: Discord. Originally designed as a platform for gamers to chat and coordinate during gameplay, Discord has evolved into a versatile social hub where people can connect, share content, and collaborate across a wide range of communities. Whether you're in a voice chat with friends, following a game studio for updates, or managing a private group, Discord has you covered.

What is Discord?

Discord is a messaging and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) platform that allows people to communicate through text, voice, and video chat. The app is organized into "servers," which can be thought of as large group chat rooms where you can create different "channels" for specific topics or activities. Inside these servers, admins can manage roles, permissions, and even set up bots to automate certain tasks with a simple command.

One of the key features that sets Discord apart is its customization options. Servers can be locked behind roles, allowing only certain members to access certain areas or rooms. Whether you’re chatting about your favorite game or sharing memes with friends, Discord makes it easy to set up spaces where you control who’s involved.

In the design department, Discord excels with its user-friendly layout. Servers are displayed on the left side of the app, and when you click on one, its rooms appear on the right. From there, you can jump into a text chat or start a voice conversation. Everything is neatly organized, making it intuitive for even first-time users.

A Platform for Gamers (and more)

Since its launch in 2015, Discord has grown tremendously, becoming the go-to platform for gamers around the world. If you were to ask any gamer how they communicate with others online, Discord would almost certainly be the answer. But while it has its roots in gaming, Discord has so much more to offer.

The app is a fantastic tool for sharing pictures, staying updated on game studio news, joining open forums, or simply having a casual conversation with friends. Its flexibility is one of the reasons it has seen such widespread adoption, not just for gaming, but for all kinds of communities and personal use.

My Honest Review

Now, for the honest truth. I recommend Discord to everyone, not just gamers. It’s an incredibly versatile app that can adapt to whatever your communication needs might be. However, there are a few areas that could use some improvement, particularly when it comes to the "paywalls" in the app. While Discord offers a free experience that’s more than enough for most people, there are some extra features locked behind a paid subscription (Discord Nitro).

These "paywalled" features include things like streaming at higher resolutions, sending larger files, customizing your profile beyond the basics (like profile pictures and status), and accessing emojis from other servers. That said, these are not deal-breakers. Most people are perfectly happy with the basic profile options and the ability to send a screenshot or a couple of images without worrying about file size limits. It’s a minor inconvenience at most, but it’s something to keep in mind.

Customization and Features Galore

One of Discord’s strongest points is its level of customization. You can adjust your microphone sensitivity, control the volume of individual people in your headset, and even use the built-in noise cancellation feature to block out background sounds like fans or pets. Plus, you can set up custom key bindings for tasks like quickly jumping to specific chatrooms without having to leave your current window. For example, a quick combo of "` + 4" could take you straight into a Call of Duty chatroom if you set it up right.

This level of control makes Discord a dream for anyone who likes tweaking settings to suit their needs. It’s a platform that gives you the freedom to fine-tune everything from your voice settings to how you interact with your community.

One Big Issue: Windows Updates

Now, as much as I love Discord, there’s one persistent issue I’ve run into: Windows updates can mess with your audio settings. Sometimes, after a system update, Discord doesn’t recognize the correct microphone or headphone input/output devices, which can leave you unable to hear others (or worse, them not hearing you). While this is a simple fix, it can be really frustrating when you're just trying to jump into a chat, and it feels like the problem is outside your control.

When this happens, you can easily go into the audio settings within Discord to select the correct devices. It’s an easy enough fix once you know where to look, but it’s annoying, especially if you’re in a rush or not feeling patient.

Recommendations for Improvement

If I could make a few changes to Discord, here’s what I’d suggest:

  1. No More Paywalls: While the free version of Discord is very generous, some of the features behind the paywall can feel a little restrictive. The extra perks are nice, but I’d prefer if more of them were available to all users without a subscription.

  2. Lock Input/Output Devices: It would be great if there were an option to lock your microphone or headphone settings, so that after a Windows update, you wouldn’t have to worry about your audio devices getting switched around. This would save time and frustration.

  3. Simplify Server Creation and Moderation: Some of the advanced features for creating and moderating servers are a little overwhelming for new users. Making these processes more intuitive could help servers reach their full potential and encourage more people to create and manage communities.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Discord is an incredibly powerful app with endless uses. It’s not just for gamers anymore, everyone can find a place in its vibrant, customizable space. While there are a few minor annoyances (like paywalls and audio issues), these don’t detract from the overall experience. With its versatility, ease of use, and strong community features, Discord is a tool that’s here to stay.

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend giving it a try, whether you’re connecting with friends or diving into a new community. Happy chatting!
